2009 to 2010 was a big travel year for me and I had finally summed up the courage (and money) to actually travel to different countries. During one of those trips I had the opportunity to travel with my girlfriend to her home country, Germany. Traveling is just one of those things people should do, and yes, I mean everyone. While traveling up and down this amazing country we stopped for a few days in Stuttgart, which is home to the legendary Porsche and Mercedes museums.
The floor plan has been designed in such a way that as you proceed through the museum there’s a slight but gradual incline that leads you to the top. It’s very subtle, much like the curves and lines on Porsche’s cars. It’s also very open inside and you never feel rushed as you walk by each car; there’s plenty of room to view all the components of each vehicle.
Of course everyone’s seen the later models Porsche has unveiled to the world, but cars like this one can’t be matched with the cars of today. What are the chances you would ever see a 1962 718 W-RS Spyder on the streets?
A true Porsche race car: the 1969 Porsche 908 LH. Thinking of the creativity and design that goes into producing a machine like this is astounding.
The vehicles and other major components designed by Porsche are situated in chronological order. When you first arrive on the main level, you begin with the very first design made by Ferry Porsche. From there, you follow the changes this company went through in almost every aspect.
Scattered throughout are various cutaways of different engines, turbos and other “magic” that’s put under the bonnet.
For Westerners, it’s not very often we see super cars that have been adapted for police duty. This 96′ 911 Carrera coupe is no exception for the German authorities.
Winners earn the right to be held high.
At the top of the museum are these halo-like frames that drop down from the roof. Standing beneath them, the raw sounds of various Porsche models are played through directional speakers, making you feel like you’re beside one.
I walked away from this trip with so many experiences and stories to share. I’ve never felt so inspired by my surroundings and I always look back at photos like this to remind myself of the opportunities out there. If there’s one piece of advice I could share with you guys, it would be this: Never. Stop. Traveling.
“In the beginning I looked around but couldn’t find the car I dreamt of, so I decided to build it myself.” – Ferry Porsche.
