Good day, DODOlogic fans. Now, the keen-eyed DODOlogic fan will notice that I’m a new contributor to this awesome site. My name is Graeme Carstens and I come from sunny South Africa. I must say, the content you are about to see is a bit left-field and will also feel familiar in a way too. Okay okay, let me explain…
This event is called DubRun. Yes, that does point towards the VAG stable, but this event is so much more as you’ll see. This was the Pre-DubRun Tape Up night hosted at a local mall’s underground parking. The meeting was hosted by the VWCSA (Volkswagen Club of South Africa) and coincidentally also marks the club’s 30th birthday this year. DubRun is an event where guys drive down from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Durban just to hang out, party and enjoy a weekend away. Almost 200 cars signed up this year. When they reach Durban, they have a small Show and Shine and some racing action. After that, it’s just relaxing and enjoying the somewhat wintry coast with friends. That’s the fun of it. All that, just to talk crap with buds about cars… I mean, what else do we need?
In a simple way, the Tape Up is just to tape up the car’s front end to protect it from stone chips during the long drive. However, over the last few years it has also sparked a bit of a competition. As you’ll see, some of the guys went all out to make their car stand out and some just kept it clean.
The Jetta in the opening shot went all out with a custom setup. Gareth sold his old mk5 (above) in favour of a bit more family-friendly space and has had his mk6 jetta for a few months now. It’s a jaw dropper already (and the only bagged mk6 Jetta in South Africa).
For the guys (like me) who love some good old mk1 and mk2 goodness, there were a few I quite liked. I also loved the two mk2 Golfs sharing the same square-eyed goodness.
And no… I did not forget about the mk3 guys. Above is a shot of Nico’s Jetta. It’s just a fine example of a very neat mk3. He is also busy with a mk2 Golf with a r32 heart – now, who wants a feature on that? Anyway, I know DODOlogic leans more towards the Japanese automotive community and I do have a few shots of the neatest FD3S Rx7 in South Africa! Warren absolutely loves his rx7 and it’s easy to see why. Makes me miss my sa22c rx7 build (also in yellow).
This concludes my somewhat short intro into South African car culture, and there is so much more I would love to share with the DODOlogic community. And yes… there will be some drifting very soon. Our biggest drifting competition, SupaDrift, is a month away and will be hosted in my hometown. Keep an eye out for that!
Hope you guys enjoyed it and my next coverage will have loads more content. Have a good one. Till next time.
