Cold gloomy skies hung over Regina’s Kings Park Speedway this past Sunday as DODOlogic’s Spring Matsuri kicked off the 2016 drift season in Saskatchewan. If you were to ask me what my favourite part about winter is, I’d probably respond with something along the lines of “When it’s over!” Many people have asked why I even bother staying in Saskatchewan if I dislike winter and cold weather so much, which is an easy question to answer: This is home, this is where my friends and family are, and honestly coming to these events feels like a home away from home. We are all one big family doing what we love to do. Everyone knows everyone – and even if you don’t, it doesn’t take long. Whether you’re a seasoned vet or a fresh rookie, you always feel welcome and are guaranteed to have a great time.
Kyle Zimmer is a veteran at Kings Park and his R32 is probably one of my favourite cars to photograph.
Jake Daneluk brought his Cressida out.
Carter Jackson of Street Junkees finished the refresh of his s14 just in time for this weekend. It’s another one of my favourites – this thing kills tires!
With all the rain from the previous day/night, the infield was a little bit muddy to say the least. The track rescue crew was busy all day pulling drivers out.
It was cool watching Bryce Haarding and Kyle Zimmer tandem into each other’s personal space.
It was also nice seeing Bryce’s car back on the track after last year’s crash at the winter drift bash which took place on December 6, 2015. With that front end, it sort of looks like he’s trying to make sure it never happens again.
Exhausts were optional…
Odd Man Out Performance made a big appearance in their fresh team livery and new third teammate. Chase Karchewski stepped up to replace Kevin Cuddington as their third team tandem driver, since it would be sort of hard for Kevin to drift with the team from Calgary with no car. It looks like Chase will fit in just fine.
Dodo’s own Megan Skeene took a break from the camera for some laps in her 180sx.
Anthony Thiessen seemed right at home in his SR20DET-powered 240SX.
All in all, it was a great event. It was nice to see everyone out there getting a feel for their cars again after a long winter. A huge thanks is owed to Kyle Zimmer and Travis Fehler for putting the entire drift season together, and I know DODOlogic is excited to be directly involved with a few events this season. That being said, I cannot wait to see what the 2016 season has to offer and I can assure you that I’ll be there. Check out a few more images below.
