I enjoy going back to my hometown of Grande Prairie, AB. There is simplicity and a calming desire that I just can’t always get in Vancouver, but it’s also home and home truly is where the heart is. Grande Prairie is where I grew up and where my passion for cars started. Another big part of me still resides there too: my 1991 R32 GTS-T, which I’ve left until I graduate from university. It sits neglected under a car cover at my parent’s house.
Living in Vancouver and going to school has changed me a lot. My views and ambitions have certainly changed since living in the prairies, but I don’t ever forget where I came from, who I grew up with and what my values are.
Shortly after I purchased my R32 in 2008, my friends started gaining interest in JDM. And before we knew it, we were all driving on the right side.
The R32 has always been a chassis I’ve been interested in. Even when the R34 became available, I still didn’t find it to be as enticing.
My good friend Tanner and I have shared a strong interest in Skylines. His, however, has a substantial amount of ‘battle wounds’ compared to mine. This track car still has love for the streets though, and so does Tanner – he just doesn’t like to admit it.
The car enthusiast community in Grande Prairie always continues to impress me and I commend them for their ambition to pursue their passions.
Simplicity
Everybody has that friend who will always have the most haggard car, yet it suits their personality.
I enjoyed being back home for a short visit and it was a great to drive my R32 for a week. I forgot what it was like to worry about fluid leaks, potholes, strange fumes in the cab, engine temps and of course, oversteering. So, this is a farewell to my car until next year.
