Greetings, western Canada! Been a while since ya heard from me, eh? Well, the off-season is a bitch and it’s just about over here in WA. So dry those tears because your savior is back.
Anyway, I spent last Sunday hanging out with some good friends. One of which is Henderson, who as you can see above is onto his next set of wheels. His FR-Z or BR-S has gathered plenty of internet attention lately, but that’s not the reason we’re here.
We’re here because of these two goofy lookin’ dudes right here: Lucas Perez and Zach Dunn. They are two of the first people I befriended when I got into cars, and coincidentally the drifting scene here in the PNW.
Today we’ll be getting a closer look at a few members of Heavy Flow — a name Lucas used to refer to his fleet of red cars that I’ve now expanded to include Zach’s Civic and my Miata. With an average engine displacement of 1.6l and not a single inch of legroom for anyone choosing the backseat, our little fun-sized fleet of red cars was just that: fun-sized. Any of these cars would make for a great track day car as well as a daily driver, and while they share many common features, none are from the same manufacturer.
First up we have Lucas’ Toyota Corolla: the good ole’ Hachi-Roku. Lucas has owned this car for 13 years as of last December. That’s longer than most people currently in the scene have been driving!
I was blessed with this rare opportunity to take a couple pictures of Lucas’ Hachi because he was pulling it out for a quick oil change in anticipation of the forthcoming warmer weather. While that never actually got done, I’m still glad I was there!
The engine was developed and built by local legend Garage Autohero and Lucas tells me not a single component was left stock.
Portland Speed Industries managed to tune a monster 164whp out of this beast of a 4A-GE. (N/A is best, right? LOL)
And away she goes until the sun decides to shine a little brighter and more consistently.
Lucas’ garage also serves as a super rare Japanese wheel storehouse.
Second on tonight’s roster is Zach’s EF Civic.
A wonderfully fun little car that carries a rather unfortunate reputation with modern automotive enthusiasts. Zach has been making great strides to break the FWD Honda owner stereotypes. This is his 3rd Civic in the last couple years and by far my favorite.
Authentic BRIDE seat and Nardi steering wheel. The perfect combination for a comfortable, yet fun daily driver.
Here we see precisely where all that fun comes from. A relatively stock B16 motor with a couple essentials like intake, header, and exhaust to help it breath a little better.
Here Zach shows us how to properly “hit V-TEC”. “MMMM-BWAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH”
While extravagance will always catch the eye of the boy-racer, it’s takes a certain simplicity to warrant the extended analysis of a true enthusiast. That sort of simplicity is something that Zach and Lucas most definitely have an eye for, and it shows in every car they put together.
