Round 2 of the DriftWest Amateur series was held at Kings Park Speedway this last weekend. With the sun beating down and tire smoke filling the air, it was a perfect weekend.
The winners! (Left to right) Geoff Krasowski (Fourth place), Kurt Porter (Third place), Jesse Ollivier (First Place), Robby Kubica (Second place)
Geoff congratulating the other three drivers.
Jesse celebrating with Kurt.
Let’s go back to the beginning with some photos from practice.
Jesse Ollivier had a little incident involving the wall that cracked the welding on his rad support. Moments after pulling into the pit, he had help tearing down the front end to find out what was broken. A cracked rad and cracked rad mount were all that needed to be fixed in order for him to run again.
People started calling around to find a rad to fit and the other competitors pitched in to help as well. One offered the welder they’d brought and another offered his skills as a third-year Welding Apprentice. Jesse was back in the game in no time.
A few more hiccups were to follow. Chris Wenngatz got chased by his own wheel when he initiated the first corner and the wheel came off. The car slid to the edge of the track and the wheel continued to roll another 100 yards or so. Despite the three wheel slide, luckily there was no severe damage.
After the accident, the car was put back together.
The other more severe hiccup was Roy Teeter’s BMW sliding into the infield at full lock and bouncing along until it came to a stop with a broken control arm.
It was fixed and back at it later the same day!
Aaron Faulds made the 8 hour drive out to Regina for the competition and qualified fourth.
Here’s Ron Richards killing it on the track. I should also mention Ron and his crew were the car savers of the weekend, helping out Jesse and quite a few of the other guys.
Blair Mcintosh didn’t make it to qualifying, unfortunately. But he did have killer runs in practice.
A big thanks goes out to Regina Mobile Tire for coming out and supporting the guys! They were constantly doing tire changes for everyone, and it was really handy having them on-site.
Thank you so much for coming out and taking time out of your day to shoot these awesome pics and write this killer article. Keep up the Great work!!! Made my day!!
