This past Saturday a few Saskatchewan drifters got together at Kings Park Speedway and put on a little drift event. Drivers from all over Saskatchewan and few from Alberta spent the day battling the cold and drifting the oval.
It has been a long time since Saskatchewan has seen a drift event and this was absolutely a step in the right direction. It was nice to see so many people come out and support the local scene.
It was also good to see people in this province get excited (again) about the motorsport I care so much about. But I don’t want to give the impression that drifting is back and here to stay in Saskatchewan. We still have a long way to go until we catch up with everyone else.
Events like this are great for people to stretch their legs and just have some fun behind the wheel. I don’t think there was one driver who didn’t have fun.
This event brought some high speeds and tire smoke, but drifting at its best is tandem. Coupled with high speeds, tire smoke, door-to-door action and multiple turns, and you have the future of Sask drifting.
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t something that will just happen. It will require a lot of work and commitment from the community. People need to see that drifting is a real motorsport and I think this event helped demonstrate that.
I am strong believer that drifting needs fans, and as I mentioned earlier, it was great to see so many people come out and support their friends and the community. A strong fan base demonstrates just how viable this motorsport could be and the fact that everyone stayed — despite the cold and windy weather — is a testament to the sport and the people involved.
I think this event was the first step in the right direction for the local drifting scene. It reminded everyone what we had been missing.
It also gave all of those who had invested in the sport a much needed pay-out. So many people in Saskatchewan have cars built for this sport and have nowhere to use them. It was nice to see those people finally be rewarded for their investments.
I think in the end everyone is thankful that this event happened and we’re looking forward to many more in the future.
Drifting will be back next year!
I’ll make sure of it!
