If there was an automotive dictionary and I was appointed to define the word “sleeper” all I would simply do is post a picture of this truck. Built for hauling his 1000hp Targa top FB to shows and alike this 1993 Toyota Pickup has a 13B from the Japanese Mazda Cosmo pushing 330rwhp and 310ft/lbs of torque!
Swapping rotary engines into anything other than Mazda’s isn’t something you hear of too often, not to mention swapping a rotary into a pickup truck.
Pushing 16lbs of boost through the Holset HX-35 on pump gas renders very nice numbers, putting the power to the ground is an ACT extreme clutch with 6 puck disc, Toyota R151 transmission and a Toyota 1 ton rear end equipped with a 4.1 Eaton LSD.
ForceFed Performance took on the project making custom exhaust, intake/intercooler and cooling systems. Judging by Justin Lilley’s vehicles if I were to dabble in the rotary world ForceFed Performance would be the first place I would talk to.
As a big guy I have always been unable to drive and feel a rotary beneath my feet because the cock pit of an RX7 isn’t exactly welcoming to anyone over 5 feet tall and 100 pounds. OK, I exaggerate, but none the less I have always been unable to fit into the rotary’s main chassis. Justin was cool enough to let me drive the pickup back to the north end on the ring road and complimented me on being the first person who didn’t stall it on his/her first stop and go.
My first time ever feeling a rotary was unexplainable, the sound, the smoothness of the power band all felt so great, so different from anything else I have driven.
Some of you may be wondering “where’s the feature on this 1000hp RX7?” My response would be to remain patient and keep your eyes open for it during the next few summer months.
I’ll end this feature off with a video of the trucks dyno run courtesy of ForceFed Performance, the last 30 seconds or so of the video puts a smile on my face!
Very cool!!!
