Two of our friends, Andrew Konoff and Spencer Pitzel have decided to embark on the epic journey across Europe known as the Mongol Rally. They were gracious enough to want to update us along their travels with pictures and stories, enjoy:
Sometime in late 2008, I heard about the Mongol Rally on community radio. A year and a half later, I’m qualified to tell you guys about it. There’s not much to tell yet, but over the next five weeks, I promise camels, castles, and cars.
After launching from the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit on Saturday, July 25, we’ve been slowly making our way to Mongolia. We hit up the Nürburgring and have made it nearly a tenth of the 10,000 miles (or 16,000 kilometers) our route will take. Up ahead is the “world’s best driving road,” Istanbul, the Black Sea ferry, the most corrupt area of Russia, a sea the Russians dried out, the nuclear fallout regions and potassium mines of Kazakhstan, and then Mongolia’s steppe and the Gobi desert.
We’ll see it all over these next five weeks, and we’ll share it with you guys. This may mean video or photo coverage of Europe’s greatest racetracks and roads, dissertations on the consistency and taste of fermented yak milk, and a hell of a lot of vehicular madness (did we mention that the Mongol Rally is done with cars that have engines smaller than 1.2 litres?). That’s kind of why we’re doing it though – it’s as much fun as you can have on four rickety wheels.
So here’s a teaser photo to get your adventure glands a-flowing – you’ll be hearing from us soon.
