Last week during SEMA, the Global RallyCross Championship held their 2012 season finale. The event took place in the Gold Lot of the the Las Vegas Convention Center. The last post concerning this event was coverage of the qualifying runs, this post is about the real stuff. This is about who would take the title in an all out battle between these 600HP AWD rally machines.
The first heat consisted of Ken Block taking a quick lead and holding it for all 8 laps.
Racing through the first corner in the first heat this Subaru had a little run in with another racer, leaving only half his bumper attached to the car as you can see in this picture of it flying through the air.
I noticed soon after watching the race that Bucky Lasek was really the only one getting sideways on the 3rd corner.
During the first heat Brian Deegan had blown a tire forcing him into the last chance qualifier.
Now onto the last heat where it was an all out battle between Foust and Block in their Ford Fiestas.
Ken Block quickly launched into the lead as it always seemed to happen on the starting line. Foust had the title in his sights and wouldn’t let Ken gain too much of a gap on him.
Watching Ken closely to make a mistake Foust knew it was just a matter of time. Soon after this picture was taken Foust snuck into first place on the first corner taking the inside line on Block. Now things were really getting intense, with Block now on Foust’s ass it was question of whether or not Ken could overtake him before the race was over.
Right before hitting the jump on the 6th lap Ken Blocks car decided it couldn’t take the abuse anymore. The cockpit of Ken’s car stated on fire rendering it impossible for him unable to compete any longer. You could tell Ken was unimpressed having to walk back to his mobile paddock.
Soon after his walk of shame the fire was extinguished and was loaded onto a flat-bedded. Once the track was clear the race would resume.
After Kens car blew up it was clear to me who would be the winner of the championship, displayed in this picture is Foust taking the lead off the starting line and holding it the entire 8 laps. Taking 2nd place was Foust’s team mate Brian Deegan and 3rd was taken by Rhys Millen.
